Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is called the “Silent Epidemic” because the uninformed public is being ravaged on a large scale by its devastating repercussions. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the total number of injuries to the head (of all types) in the United States is estimated to be in excess of 8 million per year. Put another way, every four seconds someone in the United States may suffer a degree of brain damage. Most of those who are subjected to head injuries will not experience life-changing consequences because their injuries do not result in brain damage. However, every ten minutes one of those 8 million will die, and every four minutes another will become permanently disabled from a brain injury that is truly traumatic.
Through this book Mark John has made a tremendous contribution to help survivors better understand what they are going through, giving them words to express the difficulties and challenge that complicate their lives, while equipping them with practical strategies on how to best accommodate and improve their life with a brain injury. For the survivor’s family and friends, along with medical professionals, Mark John has pulled back the mysterious curtain that alienates brain injury survivors and isolates them from much of society. He explains strategies on how to best support their survivor, helping them reach SMART goals, differentiate themselves from the injury and reenter society on a healthy, solid plateau.
